The Police: Organization, Role, and Function

In this assignment you are going to identify the organizational structure and provide an overview of the services provided for your local police department or sheriff’s office. Follow the steps below to complete this assignment.

First, go online and locate the organizational chart for the police department or sheriff’s office that provides service to the city you reside in (if not available select an organizational chart from another local department or from the ones provided in Canvas). Review that Department’s website.

Then, describe how the department is organized by their rank structure and breakdown of components/units. Go specifically into the unit makeup of each component by using that department’s website, coupled with the descriptions provided by Siegel and Worrall (2022), to explain in one or two sentences the main function of each component and/or unit. (I am not too worried about you identifying how many people are in each rank or unit, or their names, but more interested in the identification and description of the components and units).

Next, identify how many officers and civilian staff the agency has (if available). Are there other units or services you would want to see offered? If so, which ones.

Then, conclude by indicating if you believe this to be an effective organizational structure for your community.

Finally, after your text provide a copy of the Organizational Chart and the link to the website for the Department you profiled.
